Climate Action Movie Night: First We Eat – Exploring Food Sovereignty in Canada’s North
The Division invites members to an engaging evening at Bernie’s Supper Club Cinema on Tuesday, September 23, 2025, from 5:30–8:00 p.m. for a screening of First We Eat.
The film follows filmmaker Suzanne Crocker, who, along with her family of five, commits to removing all grocery store food from their home for one year. Living just south of the Arctic Circle in Dawson City, Yukon, on the traditional territory of the Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in, they rely solely on food that can be hunted, fished, gathered, grown, or raised locally — without salt, sugar, caffeine, or other staples.
What begins as a daunting challenge in -40°C temperatures evolves into a celebration of community and the unexpected abundance that even a small northern community can offer.
“Inspirational! Suzanne Crocker’s amazing experiment shows that even in the far north with strong individual, family and community effort, local food can feed us year-round.” – David Suzuki
